SHAWN'S LIFE
BACKGROUND
Shawn Peter Raul Mendes was born on the 8th of August 1998 to parents Karen and Manuel. He is the eldest sibling; Aaliyah, his younger sister, was born in 2003. His mother came from England and his father from Portugal, which is where he got his second middle name (Raul) and his last name (Mendes). He grew up in Toronto, Canada where he still lives. Shawn attended Pine Ridge Secondary School in the Pickering suburb of Ontario.
CHILDHOOD
As a child, Shawn worked towards becoming an actor but discovered his talent of singing. He began posting short 6 second videos of himself singing on Vine and then posted longer covers on YouTube; these videos were filmed by Aaliyah.
START OF CAREER
From a young age, Shawn learnt to play the piano and the guitar by tutoring himself on YouTube. He gained millions of fans on both YouTube and Vine and held his first concert on 26th of October 2013. Â In 2014, Shawn caught the eye of artist manager Andrew Gertler and Island Records A&R Ziggy Chareton, leading him to sign a record deal with them.
DEBUT SONG
In June of 2014, Shawn released his debut single ‘Life of the Party’.  This record earned him the title of the youngest person to debut in the top 25 on the Billboard Hot 100, at just 15 years, 11 months. The record also gained him the title of the youngest artist since Justin Bieber to have a Number One album!
MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS
Shawn Mendes released his debut EP, The Shawn Mendes E,P, in July 2014; it reached number 1 on iTunes in only 37 minutes! His first studio album, Handwritten, was released in April 2015 and the following year made it to the Forbes ’30 under 30: Music’ list at the age of only 17.
